ZiiGaat Luna – Balanced brilliance under $400 that you’ll be over the moon about

The Luna arrives in new ZiiGaat packaging, I quite liked their old packaging however this is a clear improvement. You get the IEMs (surprise :)), a new, slightly larger, carrying case, two sets of silicone tips which are more premium than the older style, one pair of foam tips, and finally a cable which gives you the option of 3.5mm or 4.4mm termination (Yay!). It isn’t a screw on change, however it connects more towards the cable and I haven’t had a single issue with it. Great improvements on this front.

I really liked the grey silicone tips and got an easy seal with them straight away. The shells are also very comfy and I had no issue with long session, which I ended up having with this one.

ZiiGaat have really gone all out with this IEM, they’re using quality BA’s – this is pulled straight from their website: Dual Sonion 39AY008 subwoofers deliver solid, controlled bass. Two Knowles 32873 drivers handle the midrange with natural warmth, while a pair of Knowles 33518 tweeters add sparkling clarity to the highs. For a spoiler – their brief explanations there are pretty spot on.

I tried the Luna out of many sources and found that it really scales with better sources. I had an enjoyable experience out of my dongles, particularly the LP W4, however when I plugged it into my LP E7 with the AD1955 card my goodness, what an experience. It was similarly brilliant out the LP P6P 10ae, Sony WM1ZM2, and to some extent the cheaper Cayin N3 Ultra. Pairing with the Hiby R4 was OK, however nowhere near as impressive. The impressions below are based on the LP E7.

I listened to a lot of different music, as per normal, with these and it worked extremely well with everything – nothing sounded mediocre or bad. On to the sound impressions:

Bass:

The bass presentation is impressively punchy and clean, demonstrating excellent tactility. The bass has good speed and is nicely textured. Is it as good as the best DD bass I’ve heard? No, but it does avoid many typical BA bass pitfalls, offering controlled depth and engaging impact that enhances your listening experience rather than distracting you. When it comes to BA bass I struggle to think of anything that I’ve enjoyed more than what’s offered here, it’s on par with the 7th Acoustic Supernova for me, which has held the position as my favourite BA bass set for quite some time. Extremely well done.

Listening to Prequel by Falling in Reverse the track has some wonderful bass that should exist in the background and create a dark atmosphere but allow his vocals and the other instruments to operate over the background, which is exactly what it does here. On some other IEMs everything can end up blurring together, not the case here.

Mids:

This isn’t a mid-focussed IEM, however they are extremely impressive. Instruments sound correct, they have proper weight, and vocals aren’t forward but positioned in what I’d call a middle position. Male and female vocals were equally pleasing to my ears. All of this has a little warmth to it, however not unnatural. Guitars are amazing on this set. Like most people I’ve heard stairway to heaven too many times, but when I’d heard some other guitar focussed tracks on this set I had to try out the live version from How The West Was Won. You hear the guitar soaring over the drums and cymbals in the solo, just a wonderful listen. I ended up going through a lot of my overplayed guitar solo tracks and finding a new appreciation for them, it’s been a very enjoyable review time with the Luna!

I did find the mids a little thin out of dongles and the R4, so something to consider depending on your sources. Out of the E7 no such concerns.

Treble:

Realistic. Crisp when it needs to be, airy, but comes over non-fatiguing. No sibilance. It works so well with the rest of the tuning, you get a lot of detail coming through but it’s so well balanced with the rest of the tuning that it isn’t distracting.

Technical Performance:

Soundstage width is great, extending convincingly beyond the ears. It has an airy quality, giving music a natural, open feel. Imaging is precise; instruments are easy to pinpoint, with clear separation and layering, making complex arrangements, or swirling synths, easy to follow through the stage. Detail retrieval is strong, especially notable in vocal nuances and instrumental textures. The Luna manages to remain musical and immersive without sacrificing analytical capability, a very balanced listening experience. I often end up exploring tracks when an IEM does something really different (like crazy bass etc.), the Luna doesn’t do anything crazy, however it’s so well balanced that I ended up wanting to explore more and more tracks on it over the review period.

Subjective thoughts:

It’s probably clear, but ZiiGaat have another winner here which I love. It’s been a while since I had an all BA set to review so I had to get my other sets out to compare and make sure it wasn’t just the all BA config that I was impressed by, it wasn’t. This is a great all BA set which I think easily challenges other all BA sets at much higher price points, 7th Acoustics Supernova has held a special place in my collection for a long time and this easily challenges it. I’m not sure if I’m ready to dethrone the Supernova, but this is clearly deserving to be on the same level. The more I listened to this one, the more I wanted to listen, and for an IEM what more can you really want.

Overall:

For the first all BA IEM from ZiiGaat they’ve hit a high mark straight away. Easily recommended for anyone with a source that will allow these to sing. If this were from a boutique brand you’d be paying at least double this and you’d be happy about it, at $379 you’ll be over the moon (pun intended) with your purchase.
